Disney Zebra Dome Recipe (Animal Kingdom Lodge Copycat)

Description

Zebra Domes are one of Disney’s most beloved resort-exclusive desserts, served primarily at Animal Kingdom Lodge in the Boma – Flavors of Africa buffet and The Mara quick-service restaurant.

Introduced in the early 2000s with the opening of Animal Kingdom Lodge, these bite-sized domes quickly became a fan favorite thanks to their unique combination of white chocolate mousse flavored with Amarula liqueur, a thin layer of chocolate cake, and a signature striped zebra design created with white and dark chocolate.

Few Disney desserts have developed as devoted a following as the Zebra Dome. Since the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge in April 2001, these bite-sized treats have become one of the most sought-after desserts across Walt Disney World. Created for Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Zebra Domes were designed to reflect the resort’s African-inspired culinary theme while still appealing to American tastes. Disney pastry chefs combined a light Amarula cream mousse with a layer of chocolate cake and a smooth white chocolate coating, then finished each dessert with distinctive dark chocolate stripes inspired by the patterns of a zebra. The dessert quickly became a fan favorite among Disney vacationers. Guests staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge often made special trips to Boma just to sample the famous treat. As word spread through Disney fan communities, blogs, and social media, Zebra Domes developed a cult-like following and became one of the most frequently photographed desserts at Walt Disney World. Their popularity eventually led Disney to offer them at The Mara, Animal Kingdom Lodge’s quick-service restaurant, where guests could purchase pre-packaged versions without dining at Boma. Today, Zebra Domes are considered one of Disney World’s signature resort desserts and regularly appear on lists of must-try Disney snacks. Part of the dessert’s appeal comes from its unique flavor profile. Amarula, a South African cream liqueur made from the marula fruit, provides subtle notes of caramel, vanilla, and fruit that pair perfectly with the white chocolate mousse and chocolate cake base. This distinctive combination helps Zebra Domes stand apart from more traditional Disney desserts. More than two decades after their debut, Zebra Domes remain one of the most iconic treats at Walt Disney World and continue to inspire home bakers looking to recreate a taste of Disney magic in their own kitchens.
